I believe that Charles II was a good king because he managed to pull the country together after the plague and the Great Fire of London. The people liked him because he brought back all that was jolly and fun, such as the celebration of Christmas, parties and wine. Charles II did not have a good relationship with Parliament because he had illegitimate children and no legitimate heirs. His brother was a Roman Catholic and because of the Exclusion Bill his brother would not be able to become King. Parliament wanted all kings to be the head of the Church of England and they could not do that if they followed any other religion. They were not able to agree so Charles dismissed Parliament on several occasions. Historians say that his private life was scandalous but his public one was worse. "virtually all those contemporaries who have left opinions, paid tribute to Charles's social charms, yet none ranked him as a great monarch." The reason people liked him so much because of the massive contrast between him and Oliver Cromwell. | ![]() |
